How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Let’s be real, standing in front of a camera can feel weird at first. Most of us aren’t models, and the idea of someone pointing a lens at you while you’re supposed to “act natural” can sound… intimidating. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to be a model to look amazing in photos. You just need to feel comfortable and that’s something we can totally achieve together.

1. Choose a Photographer You Connect With

This is the biggest one. When you actually vibe with your photographer, everything feels easier. You should feel like you can laugh, be a little goofy, and just *be yourself*. That connection allows your real personality to shine, which makes for genuine, emotional photos. (If you’re curious about what that feels like, check out my recent engagement sessions for some inspo.)

2. Don’t Worry About Posing Perfectly

Most people think they need to know what to do with their hands or where to look. But that’s my job! I’ll guide you into poses that feel natural and flattering without ever making you feel stiff or awkward. The best moments usually happen in between poses, when you laugh, breathe, or move together. That’s when the magic happens.

3. Dress in What Makes You Feel Confident

Your outfit can make or break how you feel during a session. Wear something that fits well, moves comfortably, and feels *like you*. Avoid anything too tight or brand new that you haven’t tested before. Neutrals, flowy fabrics, and earthy tones photograph beautifully against the natural backdrops of Vancouver Island. 4. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

If you’re doing a couples session, think of it like a date. Whisper something sweet, joke around, or take a walk hand-in-hand. When you focus on your partner instead of the camera, your body relaxes and your photos feel more authentic. Those unposed, “caught in the moment” shots are always everyone’s favourites.

5. Trust the Process

It’s totally normal to feel nervous at the start. The key is to let go of perfection and trust your photographer. I’ll always give you direction, make sure you look your best, and capture the small details you might not even notice. By the end of the session, most couples tell me they forgot the camera was even there, and that’s when we get the most magical photos.

Bonus Tip: Practice Before the Big Day

If you’re planning a wedding, an engagement session is the perfect warm-up. It gives you a chance to get used to being photographed together before the wedding day, and you’ll walk away with beautiful photos to use for your invites or wedding website. It’s a total win-win.

Remember, being in front of the camera isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being present. When you let yourself enjoy the experience, that energy shines through every image. Ready to book a session that feels relaxed, real, and a little bit magical? Let’s chat here!
