Mountain Views, Sea Breezes & Silly Love: Fiona & Josef’s Engagement Session in Victoria

May 14, 2025

Some couples just have that spark — the kind that makes you want to third-wheel their adventures and cheer for their love story like it’s your favourite rom-com. Fiona and Josef are 1000% that kind of couple.

We met up for their engagement session at Gonzales Observatory in Victoria, one of those places where the city melts into ocean views and the sky feels a little closer. It was late afternoon, the light was soft and golden, and the wind decided it wanted to be the third main character in every frame (seriously, Fiona’s hair deserves its own IMDb credit).

These two met through friends during university while playing on an intramural dodgeball team — and yep, I’m resisting the urge to make a “dodge, duck, dip, dive” joke. Fast forward five years and they’ve built a life together filled with adventure, food, laughter, and apparently… some very questionable food combos (thanks Josef).

Let’s talk proposal: mid-hike in the Swiss Alps, surrounded by mountains, wild air, and those ‘you-have-to-blink-a-few-times-to-believe-it’s-real’ kind of views — Josef popped the question on a ridge in the Ebenalps. That night, they stayed in a cabin built into the mountainside. The romance? Off the charts. The vibes? Pure elopement fantasy.

One thing that really stood out to me during our session was how beautifully different — and perfectly balanced — these two are. Fiona is the thoughtful, cautious planner. Josef? The spontaneous one who managed to convince her to drive a scooter in Bali, go bungee jumping and paragliding. He’s still working on making Dogecoin sound like a “solid investment”… no luck there (yet).

Throughout their session, we chased light across the rocks, danced with shadows on the white-washed walls of the observatory, and soaked in every golden second. They held hands like it was the first time, wandered like explorers, and laughed like they were already five inside jokes deep — which, let’s be honest, they probably were.

Their love is the kind that doesn’t need big declarations or dramatic gestures — it’s in the way they look at each other, the playful jabs, the unspoken ease. They may not have a “first dance song” picked out yet, but their current obsession is a playlist of oddball instrumental covers of pop songs. Think: Taylor Swift on accordion. It’s weird. It’s wonderful. It’s them.

As for what they wanted out of the shoot? They told me they were just planning to wing it. And honestly? That’s exactly what made it magic.

Fiona and Josef, I cannot wait to capture your “good peasant wedding” (which might be the best description I’ve ever heard). Your love is adventurous, grounded, and wildly fun — and it was such a joy to photograph a little slice of your story.
